Label, care label, trademark, brand mark, hangtag or emblem. Nomenclature assumes several other names for this product. Its basic function is informing about the most important characteristics of the product, and about the manufacturer themselves. Labels allow identification of the product, but they are also an important promotional tool.

What are labels and what are they used for?

According to the definition, a label can be determined as a trademark, brand mark or other written, imprinted, or embossed description applied to a package or container of a product. The Act of 6 March 2018 on entrepreneurs’ law exactly specifies what information must be placed on a product’s label. This information is necessary for the product to enter the market on the territory of Poland. The name and address of the manufacturer, information about the product and its purpose are the most essential data that must be placed on a label. Labels must also include the exact composition of the product, usage, expiration date, product weight, or the instructions for use. However, this is not the only information we can find on labels. As we have already mentioned at the beginning, their important function is promotion of the product and its visual identification.

Why are labels important for the product?

A label is important for a product in formal terms – to comply with the legal requirements, and in terms of image. We should pay more attention to the latter as it has a real impact on sales. Labels on products are often the first link between the customer and the brand. The consumer often notices a particular product because of an interesting, visually attractive and, at the same time, readable label. When they notice it, they reach for the product and become immersed in the content included on the label. Thus, it is truly important that product labels combine an interesting, eye-catching design with well-thought-out content which will convince the customer to make a purchase transaction.

Types of product labels

When planning the visual identification of a product and subsequently its branding, you have to decide how will it be marked. Appropriate marking increases the brand’s recognition. The label is that marking element without which a product cannot get onto the shelves of the shop. You only have to choose what type of label  you will use. Much depends on the industry you are operating in and the product itself. Products in the food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, or chemical industries are most often marked with stick-on labels. However, it is worth supplementing them with jacquard or cardboard labels, which will be an additional decoration of a product. Clothing and textile industries use many more types of marking. However, in terms of labels, manufacturers most often choose cardboard labels or jacquard labels.
